When Cairns Turned Tropical… We Turned It Into a Game Show

Our team had arrived in Cairns ready to host a high-energy Corporate Amazing Race for the fantastic crew at Pepper Money. The clues were printed, checkpoints were ready and our purple shirts were ready to go. Everything was set for a brilliant afternoon of outdoor corporate team building.

Then… the sky opened.

Not a gentle tropical drizzle either. Right as teams were gathering to start the race, Cairns delivered a proper tropical storm. Rain came down sideways, umbrellas surrendered almost immediately and it became very clear that an outdoor race was not going to happen.

When the Weather Has Other Plans

Now when you run events across Australia, you quickly learn that weather can change the plan in seconds. Tropical locations like Cairns can turn from sunshine to storm clouds without much warning.

That’s exactly why we always travel with a wet weather back up plan. Because while the rain might cancel the race, it definitely shouldn’t cancel the fun.

So our team jumped into action.

Within minutes we were chatting with the resort staff, scouting available spaces and securing a conference room inside the resort. The outdoor race plan was quickly swapped for something just as exciting… an energetic indoor team building activity.

And honestly, it turned out to be a brilliant pivot.

Turning a Conference Room into a Game Show Arena

Once everyone made their way inside (slightly damp but still smiling), our hosts kicked things off with a quick briefing. Teams formed, competitive spirits appeared and the room quickly filled with laughter.

Instead of racing around Cairns, the Pepper Money team suddenly found themselves in the middle of a full-blown game show experience.

We rolled straight into classics like Family Feud, where teams confidently delivered answers that were sometimes spot on… and sometimes hilariously off the mark. Next came The Price is Right, which quickly proved that guessing everyday prices is far harder than people think.

Of course, no game show is complete without a bit of ridiculous chaos. That’s where Face the Cookie came in. Watching grown adults attempt to wiggle a cookie down their face without using their hands is always entertaining, and the Pepper Money team fully committed to the challenge.

Competitive Spirits Activated

As the games continued, the energy in the room kept building. We added a series of Minute to Win It challenges which had teams cheering, shouting advice and celebrating small victories like they had just won Olympic gold.

What we loved most was how quickly the group embraced the change of plan. Within minutes teams were chanting for their players, passionately debating answers and keeping a close eye on the scoreboard.

The competitive spirit kicked in fast, which is exactly what we love to see in fun corporate team building.

While the tropical storm continued outside, inside the room the atmosphere was buzzing. The laughter was loud, the competition was fierce and the team bonding happened completely naturally.

Sometimes the weather throws a curveball. But with the right wet weather back up plan, even a tropical storm can turn into an unforgettable indoor team building activity.

And in this case, it turned into a very competitive game show instead.
